Interesting answers to curious questions

28 May 2013

We say: ‘be silent like fish’. But there is another saying in Russian language:  ‘roar like beluga’ (beluga is a big-size fish of the sturgeon family).

How can the fish ‘roar’?

However, the fish – beluga – has nothing to do with the saying that actually means ‘to cry loudly’. The fact is that the name ‘beluga’ – more precisely ‘belukha’ – was used in Russian language to name polar dauphine – ‘belukha’ (white whale) (belukha is a derivative from ‘bely’ Russian for ‘white’). And it is a whale that makes strong and loud roar.
